Babies get so frustrated when they can’t
tell you what they want! With just a few simple signs, you can start
communicating with your baby--even before he starts to talk! Signing is fun,
easy to do, and good for your child’s development. It’s the simple secret to a
happier baby.
My goal is to help you, the parent, break communication barriers between you and your young child. Children learn to point, wave, clap, and blow kisses long before they learn to speak. Baby sign language enables
your child to tell you if she wants to eat, is thirsty, needs help, or needs a diaper
change. It's an amazing feeling to communicate with your eight-month-old and have him clearly tell you, with his hands, what he needs. Learning ASL will also enable your child to communicate with thousands who
are hard of hearing or deaf.
I began teaching my son a small number of baby signs at three months old. I started with the basics--milk, drink, more, mom, and dad. When he was six months old, he used his first sign. He was crying inconsolably and nothing we offered was helping. All of a sudden he stopped crying, looked at us, and opened and closed his fist in the 'milk' sign. It was clear as day and we were in shock. I began to nurse him and he fell asleep within a few minutes. It was the most amazing, accomplished feeling. My six- month-old was communicating with me! He told me what he needed! I was a firm believer. A short time later, my skeptical family was too. It is adorable to watch others watch my son. He asks for help instead of throwing fits. He knows what he wants and usually can tell us what it is. He even can tell us when he needs a diaper change (When he is ready, that is!).
In a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), children age eight who were taught signs as babies scored an average of 12 points higher on IQ tests when compared to their non-signing peers. I can't recommend it enough! I have encouraged everyone--mothers, fathers, even grandparents--to teach their young ones. This is why I became certified by the Signing Time Academy. I want to help anyone I can to have a stronger, more fulfilling and rewarding relationship with their young children. My son is living proof, along with so many other young children.
